Hello friends!
I wanted to let you know that our Wheaton camp is filled to capacity this time…

As I was doing registration yesterday, I would ask if the camper had been to camp before and
much of the time, the response was, “No. This is our first time here.”
What a blessing to have so many kids at camp who are totally new to Christian hockey camps…
But, also, a huge challenge because of the variety of backgrounds these kids are coming from.

When I spoke with Alex this morning he asked for prayer for all the campers and staff at the camp…
that they would show the love of our LORD to all of these kids… and for patience and wisdom and
guidance from the LORD in reaching all these new kids…and re-kindling the fire of the Holy Spirit in the
returning campers and staff…

We have a unique opportunity this week to reach so many hockey players and their families…
especially as the Stanley Cup playoff games continue…
Obviously, the whole camp will be watching the game tonight, and we will be praying for the Lord’s
direction and inspiration as the campers discuss the things that happen during hockey games…

“Christian Hockey” seems to be an oxymoron to many… and yet we have a special platform from which
we can share the Gospel with many who have never before heard about the gifts of grace and hope
and salvation…

We know that God answers prayers…and so, we would ask that you keep the camp in your prayers
this week… it will be a great challenge…and yet, with great challenges, often come wonderful blessings…
We can accomplish no good things except through the LORD in prayer and we covet your prayers as we
seek His strength and wisdom and Spirit this week…

Thank you…so much…
In His love…
Debbie Pirus

Dear ones…

Thank you again for your prayers…
We have definitely felt the peace and comfort from God that transcends all understanding as we have waited upon Him (and the doctors! :o) ) for answers this past week…

We have been waiting for the INR # to get up past 2 and this morning it was at 2…and the lung specialist came in at 1 this afternoon and said that if all goes according to plan, Alex might be able to go home tonite after his last 2 doses of medication…

He has been getting injections of Lovenox 2x a day in his abdomen and Coumadin by mouth in order to deal with the blood clots in his lungs, and to thin the blood so he does not form more clots…

Apparently the one test that came back positive for a clotting factor in his blood was a false positive…and this is good news and bad news…
Bad news because this means they still have NO idea why he got the blood clots in his lungs….
Good news because this means he only needs to be on the Coumadin for 6 months to a year and then he can stop taking it…

We will need to adjust his diet for awhile in that dark, leafy green vegetables can only be eaten in very small amounts because they are high in Vitamin K, which interferes with the Coumadin… there are also certain other supplements that need to be avoided…
And he will need to have his blood tested regularly to make sure the medication is doing its job adequately…

The doctors also said that playing hockey while taking blood thinners is very risky…
The greatest concern would be a blow to the head which could cause bleeding in the brain and would most likely be fatal…
Unfortunately, even if he was VERY careful, accidents do happen on the ice…
I’m sure you have all seen some of those “accidental” hockey injuries and understand the doctors’ concerns!
I’m going back to the hospital now to see if I can bring my boy home…YAY!!!

Thank you all…again…from the bottom of our hearts…
For all the prayers and calls and love…
God Bless you and keep you…always…

In His love…
debbie

Dear Friends…

Just a quick message to thank you for your continued prayers :o) Alex is feeling better each day and that is an answer to prayer!

The doctors are trying to get the correct amount of Coumadin for Alex before they send him home…this will thin his blood and help dissolve the clots in his lungs and prevent new clots from forming.

Apparently each person metabolizes the drug differently in the liver depending on a number of factors that are particular to each individual…so they need to keep testing his blood to get it to a certain point… it’s at 1.3 right now and they need it between 2 and 3…

They are also doing some additional blood tests to determine if he does in fact have any particular clotting disorders that could have caused this to happen…
One of the tests came back positive for a clotting factor, but it could have been a false positive, so they needed to re-test…and the results should be back soon…

We are hoping to be able to get him home in a day or 2…

What a blessing to have so many people praying for us and concerned about how we are doing…
We continue to thank God for the gift of family and friends and ask Him to bless you…each and every one…

In His love…
Debbie and Alex

Dear Friends of H.M.I.
March 2009

Swirling all around us in news cast after news cast are voices of doom and gloom…It seems in every aspect and arena of life there is no good news…the economy, wars and rumors of wars, global warming, crime, hunger, poverty, abortion on demand…on and on it goes.

Yet in the midst of all the doom and gloom and darkness we have a Saviour who brings hope and peace and light, and Good News to the table…One who was rich but became poor so that we through His poverty might be rich…One who is the author of life and was put to death by being nailed to a cross…but God raised from the dead…because it was impossible for death to keep his hold on Him…One who is the Light of the world and promises all who follow Him to walk in the light of life…One who was exalted to the right hand of God and lives to pray for His beloved…

This Jesus, God’s Champion, is moving with power in the world of hockey at this time. He never changes. The world’s problems and concerns do not hinder His work or His plan. He continues to draw hockey players to Himself as they are invited to listen to learn and to accept Jesus through the many HMI chaplains and programs throughout the game.

Indeed we at HMI are keeping our heads about us because we have the answer to man’s dilemma…we have the solution to man’s search for peace. It is Jesus, the world’s Saviour and Prince of Peace…what a joy to be His messengers of hope and reconciliation to the world of hockey.

Thank you very much for being a part of this team…we need you and could not continue this mandate without your prayers and support.

May the Lord’s Blessings be upon you,
Don Liesemer

Dear Tom and EVERYONE at WCCC...

Thank you so much for the out pouring of love and compassion offered to us this past week... and throughout the year...and it was such a blessing to be able to meet some of your other missionary families and hear about their lives...

I know we are not the "typical" missionaries one might picture and it takes a little bit of "thinking-outside-the-box" to imagine what our mission field looks like...(in fact...it is not a "field" at all...it's a lot of ICE!!!)

We truly appreciate the opportunity to be able to share, and explain, how it is we go about "doing" ministry to the hockey "sub-culture"...:c}... and we could never do this ministry if it wasn't for the prayers of our faithful prayer warriors...

thank you... thank you... thank you...
and God Bless You...EVERY ONE...

Dear Friends,

Yesterday I was doing a chapel with the Chicago Steel and was speaking to one of the regular attenders. He has a concussion and he stayed afterwards so that he could tell me what happened. He is struggling a little as to why God has allowed him to get a concussion when he was acting honorably and he is very thankful that he did not die in the altercation. Would everybody please pray for God to heal him? Thank God that he was not more seriously injured... a player recently died in Canada from the same type of incident.
And lastly that God would be glorified and that his faith would grow from all of this.

Thank you
Alex

Subject: ... an update on Derek from a friend who went to visit
Grandma Judy, Norma, Uncle Keith and Aunt Janelle were there. When we first got there he was having a hard night. It truly broke our heart but we got him out of it and wound up staying at the hospital until 1am watching Pineapple Express. His breathing thru the night was rough and when we got to the hospital on Sat am, he was in a cocoon, covered from head to toe in piles of blankets and only his breathing mask could be seen. He was wiped out but by the late afternoon, after lots of rest he was a new person. Thank you to all who helped set up the webcam so he could see the TI game!!! We stayed again til almost 1am. I can't tell you how long it’s been since I stayed up that night. He has great nurses!!! He is definitely being cared for under careful eyes! He started eating on Saturday with a little bit of strawberries and then there was no stopping him. Up until that point he was eating only a bite of this and that. He is now the strawberry king!!! He is finally getting his appetite back and it was probably the sugar on the strawberries that brought him back. So by the time we left he had eaten scrambled eggs and raviolis and tiny bites of cheeseburger too. They are trying to get as much protein by eating to get his calorie count up instead of just through the feeding tube through his nose. He's lost alot of weight so he needs all the protein he can get. It was soooo difficult to leave on Sunday that we stayed longer than we had intended!! He was supposed to be transferred out of ICU today but they had no room on the rehab floor. Hopefully tomorrow. They did finally start his boot camp rehab today and it was rough!!! They had him on the floor on a 10x10 mat working every part of his body. Mike said he was mentally and physically exhausted. This is the time that is going to be the most challenging and frustrating for him. You have to remember that even though he has feeling in his arms and hands, there is nerve pain. And the only movement he has is from his arms. He can't scratch an itch on his head, in his nose or his ear. He has no motor skills in his fingers yet. He has feeling right now from 2inches under his nipple line, up. He was taken off all ivs today so he's a free man!!!! This is going to be a really tough week so keep him in your prayers and thoughts. They are going to kick his butt with the therapy but he is a fighter.

Thought you guys might be interested to know.

Dear Friends...

The Blackhawks Alumni and Derek's coach, Marc Kapsalis, and the Chicago Fury Hockey organization are putting together a benefit hockey game scheduled for, Friday, February 13th.

The proceeds will go to Derek's family in order to help with the major expenses that they have incurred... and the amazing outpouring of prayers and care and concern for the Zike family will undoubtedly lift their spirits and encourage them in this difficult journey...

There are many former NHL players being contacted to participate in the event and preparations are on-going...as the details are finalized, they will become available on the Chicago Fury website...

They are planning on having a silent auction and busy collecting items for donation for that evening...

There is a website that I went to derekzike.com and it sent me to another website that described the injury...and BJ found some other information on Facebook...as for right now, all I know is that prayers are greatly needed and appreciated...and the information about the "pain" Derek felt in his legs may have been a misunderstanding...

As soon as I have something more definite I will let you know...thank you so much for all the prayers and concern you have each expressed...God Bless you...and Lord...please heal Derek...

Alex and BJ are away at a tournament in Michigan and received word of a player named Derek Zike who went headfirst into the boards...he was taken off the ice on a stretcher... not moving... and went to a hospital in Ann Arbor and had surgery...

He seems not able to move his legs...even after the surgery...could you please send up some prayers for him and his family and his coach and teammates...
I believe he is a midget minor player on Marc Kapsalis' Fury team out of Orland...

Dear friends...

Thank you so much for your prayers for Derek and his family and team...

Coach Marc says THANK YOU ALL for your prayers for Derek and KEEP PRAYING because your prayers are being heard...

Dear Ones...

We seem to be experiencing some spiritual battles at the Pirus household and
would greatly appreciate your prayers...

Alex and BJ are in Colorado for a tournament this weekend...BJ is hoping to
play in the games Sat. and Sun...
As far as we can tell, his kidney laceration has healed... but could you
please pray for safety for him this weekend?
Also... we are in the process of trying to help BJ process some of the
"worries and anxieties" that seem to be overwhelming him
lately... we have 2 appointments scheduled next week to discuss some
possible treatment options...we truly need prayer for wisdom
in this "battle"...

Misty is really struggling with her hockey team this season...
We went up to MN last weekend for parents' weekend and there were 2 hockey
games we went to...
She played a couple of minutes the first game... but the coach never put her
in at all the second game...
Needless to say, she was devastated... 2 of her roomates and their parents
were there to see her play, as well as Alex and I...
and my mother's heart was breaking for her as i saw her, periodically
throughout the game, take off her hockey glove and reach up
under her helmet to wipe away the tears that she simply could not hold
back...:c{...

Sammie is still looking for a job and the job market is awful right now...

Alex has some chapel presentations scheduled for next week...the Steel...
the Rockford Ice Hogs... Lake Forest College...
and the Wolves... and your prayers for all of those would be greatly
appreciated...
(Alex will give you more specific details about those teams when he gets
back in town!)

We always thank God for you and ask for His blessings upon you...
We treasure your prayers and your love for us...

Thank you, dear ones...

Here's our prayer and praise update.

Misty is finally back home, safe and sound from a very trying Spring Semester at School... please pray that she can find a job for the summer.

Debbie has somehow hurt her shoulder. It was very painful and still is now.
She is doing physical therapy. Please pray for healing and strengthening.

BJ is still going through the process of try-outs in hockey for the Fall.
Please pray that he would get placed on a team by next week so it will release Alex from having to stay in Chicago for try-outs in July. If BJ can get placed soon, Alex will be able to go to Slovakia for an HMI camp.

Samantha's job is only a temporary job. Please pray that it would become a permanent job with benefits. Also, please pray for her to seek the Lord's direction in her life.

We have our Christian Hockey camp here at Wheaton College...June 22 through the 27th. Please pray for safety, that the hearts of the campers would be open to the Gospel, strength and energy for all of the workers of the camp, and that God would be glorified through the whole week of camp.

Alex and Debbie

Praise
A Christian men's hockey group (Pass it on, PIO) hosted a Hockey tournament in Dyer Indiana, April 18th-20th... Alex was the keynote speaker and he gave his testimony... the gospel was presented and Anchor For The Soul (Ray Pritchard's Gospel Book, Keep Believing Ministries) books were given to every participant. 4 teams from Chicago, 2 from Texas, 1 from St. Louis and 1 from Boston participated in the tournament.
These teams were a mixture of Christian and non-Christian players...
Continue to pray for those that are not... that they would make Jesus their Lord and Savior...
The Chicago Christian Hockey Camp entered the tournament...we won the tournament, Moody will be displaying the hardware… we were officially called the HMI/MOODY Blues (Dave Mitchell, Moody news guy in the mornings, was our back-up goalie)…

Please Pray For...
Misty as she finishes up the semester at Bethel... finals will be tough. Debbie's continued struggles with health issues. BJ as he goes through a very competitive try-out time in hockey that he would be encouraged in the Lord. Samantha that she would walk closer to the Lord... she has the facts in her head knowledge but her heart is torn between the world and the Lord and she is not exercising her faith. Alex as he struggles with being a good father, husband and leader

Ten Years of Prayer and Waiting

Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise, His greatness no one can fathom.

Ten years ago, when I first started in ministry with Hockey Ministries, one of the first calls I made was to the Chicago Wolves hockey team. I asked the coach if I could come in and talk to his players about our chapel program. He said that he would take to him about it to see if anyone was interested. The coach reported back to me and said no one was interested. I never knew whether he had even asked them until years later. I was playing with the black Hawks alumni team and started to talk to a player who had formerly played on the Wolves. I told him what I did for HMI and told him about contacting the coach. He told me that the coach had, in fact, asked his players about chapels and actually one of the players lifted his hand to indicate his interest. But two veterans next to his stall pulled his arm back down and told him that they did not want chapels on their team. Over the years I have done bible studies with individual players on the Wolves but I never got to present our program to all of the players in a single setting.

This October I contacted the coach of the Chicago Wolves Hockey team. I wanted to arrange a meeting with the whole team so that I could tell all of them about the Hockey Ministries chapel program. As always, the coach was cordial and very helpful, except when it came to making his players attend the 5 to 7 minute introduction meeting. I knew that if the players were not required to come to the meeting they just would not come. Hockey players hate meetings and if they have a choice they won’t show up. I had already tried this voluntary method and only 2 to 3 players would show up and those were the players that I was already meeting with on a weekly basis for Bible studies. I wanted the other players on the team to at least know what was available to them. We were at an impasse until I asked the player representative. The coach asked one of the assistants to bring the player rep. into his office so that we could talk to him. (Years ago I had talked to one of the player reps. on the team and he told me that he would never facilitate a chapel. He said that when he was 9 years old a pastor had forced him to sit in a chair for hours until he consented to become a Christian). I asked the new player rep. if he had heard of Hockey Ministries International and the chapel program. He said that he had, and that some of the players on the team were asking if we had a chapel program here in Chicago. I asked if he would be willing to call a players’ meeting to introduce the players to the chapel program. He said he would…WOW! He gave me his number and we set a date in min November.

In mid November I showed up for the meeting and every player on the team was present for the short presentation. This was a first for me, and for them too, I might add. I came prepared to do a demonstration chapel at the end of this meeting so that the players who had shown an initial interest could actually see a real chapel. Eight players showed up for the demonstration chapel…another first for Chicago!...and they were all interested in continuing the chapel program on a regular basis for their team. So far I have had one more chapel in December and eight players showed up again. God is great! Thank you for partnering with us in this through your support and prayers.

PRAY AND PRAISE

Please pray for Debbie to be able to find some relief from the pain of fibromyalgia. It seems the added stress of the move has exacerbated the pain. She still does not have health insurance coverage. We have applied to ICHIP, the Illinois Comprehensive Health Insurance Plan.

Chapels are going great with the Chicago Steel Junior A hockey team. 4-9 players usually attend. Please pray that they would make Jesus their Lord and Savior.

Please pray that Alex would be able to do a chapel presentation with Robert Morris College, and the Rockford Icehogs.

There are some Blackhawk players that might be interested in doing Bible studies.

Samantha has a job and seems to be adjusting well.

Please pray for Misty. She took a hard shot to her foot and has been getting therapy for the injury.

Hebrews 13:18 Pray for us. We have no doubts about what we're doing or why, but it's hard going and we need your prayers. All we care about is living well before God.

Read how our newest missionaries, Alex and Debbie Pirus met Mimi, a WCCC member, 25 years ago in downtown Chicago. We never know how much our witness will mean in our future!

HMI has witnessed God’s relentless pursuit of the lost in the hockey world, as He had raised up hockey missionaries and sent them into the arena with the message of His love.
